Liposomes
Liposomes are little bladder, made with the same material as a cell membrane. Liposomes can be use to cure many diseases like cancer.
Liposomes are spherical structures, usually between 15nm and 1000nm in diameter. Their membranes composition (like the cell membrane) is a double-layered sheet called a lipid bilayer.As you can see in the picture there are two layers of lipids. The lipid bilayer gives cell membranes a flexible structure that forms a strong barrier between the cell and its surroundings. In addition to lipids, most cell membranes contain protein molecules that are embedded in the lipid bilayer. Carbohydrate molecules are attached to many of these proteins. |
Liposomes can be used to transport substances such as drugs and nutrients into the cell, out of the cell, and between different parts of a cell. Here is a picture of a liposomes being incorporated into a cell. (The drugs or nutrients will be in the part call Liposome inclusion.) The structure of a liposome help to transport substances because it has the same membrane of the cells so after it delivers the substance it becomes part of them. |
This kind of nanoparticle are used for to many diseases including cancer. These are important to the cancer therapy because they bring to the diseased cells drugs that fight the disease.
Personal Opinion
I think Nanotechnology is an important discovery. There will be a lot of things that nanotechnology will be able to accomplish in the health business, but the main one that most people are interested in is the ability to cure cancer. Because certainly, in the future, nanotechnology will cure cancer and we will not use radiation or chemotherapy that damage our body.
Some nanotechnology are already on the market today, while other are in the making.
I think that in the future every nanotechnology will be helpful, we have just to design, make and test them.
